When a baby or young child suffers with chronic illness and potential long term disabilities, the family is under tremendous pressure. In addition to frequent medical appointments, the family also faces struggles to understand their child’s diagnosis and what the future may hold.
We at Sammy's Friends Foundation, like the parents of these precious children, want them to live to their full potential and have the best quality of life possible.
Special Children Have Special Needs
While medical doctors and specialists are essential for a child's medical stability, intensive and specialized therapies are crucial for them to reach developmental milestones and functional skills. Therapists work directly with families to significantly improve these long-term outcomes.
However, parents seeking developmental therapies often face coverage limits or denials from insurance companies. Furthermore, due to low reimbursement rates, many outpatient facilities require therapists to manage high patient volumes, which can restrict their ability to provide optimal care.
Particularly in New Jersey, many specialized therapists establish private practices to ensure adequate, high-quality care. Because insurance companies make in-network credentialing difficult, many of these practitioners operate out-of-network. While they may provide itemized billing for parents to submit for out-of-network reimbursement, insurance payouts remain low. Sammy's Friends Foundation steps in to help families defray these substantial out-of-pocket costs.
